In recent eyelash extension adhesive news…..
As a trained, certified and licensed eyelash enhancement studio, we at EyeDeux take this “Xtreme-ly” serious and thought we should share.
Notes from Jo Mousselli, Registered Nurse, CEO, President, and Co-Founder of Xtreme Lashes:
Does Xtreme Lashes add formaldehyde to its eyelash extension adhesives?
“We DO NOT add formaldehyde to ANY of our adhesives. Furthermore, our FlexFusion Adhesive is both hypoallergenic and medical-grade.”
“Formaldehyde is NOT an added ingredient in any Xtreme Lashes adhesives. Our adhesives are made using the same properties and ingredients found in medical-grade adhesives. Medical-grade adhesives are used by surgeons to close wounds without stitches, a practice called suture-less wound closure. Additionally, Our FlexFusion line of adhesives are hypoallergenic, medical grade, and manufactured at a US-based, FDA registered facility that specializes in medical adhesives.
There is a very, very low chance that during the degradation process, after the drop of adhesive has been dispensed from the bottle, a miniscule amount of formaldehyde ‘may’ be produced. This is true of all cyanoacrylate adhesives- including those used in the medical industry to close wounds without sutures. Please note that we teach our Lash Stylists to change the adhesive drop every 15 minutes and to discard the bottle every three months after opening. Having said this, if formaldehyde is released, the chance is very, very small and the amount is very, very minuscule.”
Do eyelash extension adhesives or eyelash extension applications cause infections?
“Infections are caused by pathogens: infectious microorganisms such as bacterias, viruses, fungus/yeast, and parasites. Xtreme Lashes adhesives are developed under strict sanitary and hygienic conditions. Additionally, our Lash Stylists are trained to perform safe, sanitary, and hygienic application techniques, using single-use disposable application products to prevent contamination and the spread of infectious organisms from one person to another through cross-contamination.
The only application tools that are NOT disposable are the tweezers, scissors, and adhesive trays which can be disinfected and sanitized with solutions such as Barbicide®. Furthermore, we train our Lash Stylists to segment lash extensions from lash trays, using designated clean scissors, and to apply the lash segments to a clean and single-use disposable sponge prior to the application to prevent cross-contamination.”

Part 2 of Eyelash Enhancements, Allergies and Allergic Reactions
A large portion of the population (up to 15%) has severe allergies to medical tape and band aids. Many of these people are not aware of the allergy until they have lash extensions applied. The under eye stickers are similar to medical tape and the skin around the eyes is much more sensitive and sensitive than the skin on the rest of the body… This allergy can appear at any time. Symptoms can develop after years of using lash extensions or they can appear the first time the product is used. To rule out tape allergies, use no stickers or tape on these clients. For most people, gel pass are a good substitute, for others, a plastic mascara shield… Tape allergies squally present themselves to the whole eye area, not just redness and swelling along the upper lash line.
Please inform your certified lash stylist of ANY irritation during the eyelash extensions application and/or after you leave the studio. If you experience this during the application, your stylist should be able to stop and either adjust the tape/ pads or replace with a different material to make the appointment more relaxing. If you experience this AFTER the appointment, contact your lash stylist so that they may record this in your file and use another material during your next appointment.
While reading posts from fellow lash stylists around the world on Facebook I decided to share this important post. Those who are not part of that private online group, fellow lash stylists and anyone who is currently and/or thinking about wearing eyelash enhancements, this should be read:
Allergic reactions are very complex because they can be caused by many different factors relating to the eyelash extensions and they can manifest themselves at any time and in many different ways. Some people experience redness and swelling of the eyelid close to the lash line. Some people have diffused redness and swelling all around the general eye area. Most of the time the redness and swelling is accompanied by itching.
There are several different causes of reactions and it is important to be able to distinguish a true allergic reaction from simple irritation. Irritation also has several different causes and differs from a true allergy in that it does not cause the body to produce histamine. Sometimes the only way to distinguish between an allergy and irritation is to see if the symptoms respond to anti-histamine medications such as Benedryl. Because we cannot give medical advice to our clients, we sometimes have to refer them to their family doctor if we suspect that they may be having a true allergic reaction. So how can an eyelash specialist recognize the causes and symptoms of a true allergic reaction? The following is a list of variables that must be considered:
1. Medical tape
3. Eyelash lid irritation
4. Seasonal allergies
5. Eye irritation
6. Inflammatory skin conditions
Please check back to this blog on further explanations of each point. At EyeDeux we take the profession of certified and licensed lash stylists seriously and want to assure or clients new and seasoned that we have their best interest at heart.

Thanks for the reminder from a fellow lash stylist! Allergy season is Here!
We must add, to clean your lash extensions, LINT FREE brushes are best! Available at both EyeDeux locations.
Almost two years ago the latest technique with eyelash extensions started in Russia. The Owner of EyeDeux has traveled to learn this new technique and has brought it to VA! What is is called? VOLUME LASHES!
What are Volume Lashes?
2D-6D lashes or Volume lashes are thicker, fuller lashes compared to the classic semi-permanent extensions. This technique was started in Russia and has taken the Lash World by storm….EyeDeux is the FIRST in the Hampton Roads are of Virginia to offer this technique.
How does Volume eyelash extensions differ from the Classic eyelash extensions?
Classic eyelash extensions are attached to your natural lashes at a ratio of 1:1. The Volume technique allows 2-6 eyelash extensions to be attached to 1 natural lash.
Is this safe/healthy for my natural lashes?
YES! The eyelash extensions used for the Volume technique are much thinner in diameter therefore very little weight is added to your lashes including the adhesive.
How do I know I can get Volume lashes?
Consult your trained technician! Most people are able to get at least the 2D volume effect while some are able to get 6D. This is based upon the health of your natural lashes, their diameter and length.
Can I get more length with this new Volume technique?
NO! The focus is on VOLUME. If the extensions are too long, more weight is added to your natural lash and most likely to shed prematurely.
Does this process cost more?……

Out of curiosity, have you searched “eyelash extensions ” and viewed some of the pictures? While composing a photo shoot for the EyeDeux studios in Hampton Roads VA, I’ve noticed majority of the faces……are the same color! Where’s the diversity?!
While some lash stylists feel its ok to use corporate photos for their marketing, I question what these pictures are saying to your future clients.
I am quite disappointed when people ask, “what is your clientele like”? This tells me that they have seen very few pictures from major brands showing that women of all shapes, sizes AND ethnicities are able to get eyelash extensions.
At Eye Deux, we have made it a point to showcase not only the qualities mentioned above, but also different eye shapes and the eyelashes in their natural state. The before pictures are important especially to those who have weak, damaged, extremely curly, thin, downward pointing, short……..lashes. The after pictures show a realistic result in a complete set of extensions. Through our web site and social media, future patrons will be able to see that Yes, they too can wear eyelash extensions!
Sharing this story and set of pictures for several reasons…..
We must not assume the reason/s a person decides to get eyelash enhancements. Besides the obvious reason of wanting to look good, some choose eyelash enhancements to correct or disguise an issue. For example, alopecia, hyper thyroid, overly curly lashes, changing the eye shape, recovering from chemo therapy…..
This lady was referred to our Studio by her stylist in Florida. She was not wearing the same brand yet was told to use the XtremeLashes Directory! EyeDeux and many other studios are thankful for a directory for traveling Lash Addicts to know they have a Certified stylist in the area to help them. I encourage fellow stylist to “get to know each other” near and far so in the event a client needs to travel, they have a second home to go to.
During consultation I noticed one eye had less lashes than the other, my initial assumption was from sleeping. (I favor my left side during nap time so I tend to lose extensions faster on the left). Well this was not the case for her. Regardless of the reason, which for her privacy I will not share, these eyelash extensions are a major benefit to her. She can continue her very active lifestyle of outdoor activities without worrying about mascara.
Another reason I am sharing these pictures are to show that not everyone can get 100+ extensions per eye! This is important for future eyelash enhancement clients to see. There are so many brands advertising their extensions by using the most full set of natural lashes they can find. (Go ahead an do a search for XtremeLashs, NovaLash, LavishLash, Ardell, JB Cosmetics, etc) How many times have you, the stylist, or you the customer heard or want “that look”. We must realize that everyone’s eyes and lashes are NOT the same. In first picture above, the young lady is not able to get the full set of extensions to look like the Kardashians using the semi-permanent extensions. She may be able to get the look using another type of enhancement but these extensions are best for her natural lashes LONG TERM!
False eyelashes have made its way to national news again.
This made me pay even more attention to women on tv/film and their eyelashes….
In The Great Gatsby, the leading women are all wearing CLUSTERS or STRIP false eyelashes. There is a major difference from what Ms Chenowiths had on. The clusters were applied to ENHANCE their eyes, not to overshadow them. Makeup Artist Maurizio Silvi applied her lashes each day. (Which means she was able to remove them daily)
I also noticed cluster lashes in the movie Oblivion…great job to that makeup artist/lash stylist.
They attached a few clusters(or what some may call individual lashes) between her natural lashes.
Ladies false lashes may not be for everyone yet they can definitely be seen everywhere!
