I am thankful to have had the opportunity to experience a two day class with the incredible Vicky Martin at the Nouveau Contour USA location in Orlando, FL. She is the Owner of the creator of the Vicky Martin Method(tm) and the great practice breast molds. I wanted to take this particular class for a few reasons…
As some may know, my Beautiful Mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2009. She had a unilateral mastectomy and like many undergoing chemotherapy she lost majority of her hair. In an effort to help my Mother and to possibly help others, I became trained and licensed in permanent cosmetics. This allowed me to provide eyebrows to those who had none, this included more than just cancer warriors. What fascinated me more was that after a mastectomy, some opted for areola and 3D nipple repigmentation. Although I was able to give my Beautiful Mother her eyebrows, we were not able to do her areola. She fought extremely hard while loving life until June 2016.
Since her passing, I have been even more determined to assist those who chose to have their areola and nipples recreated. With further education, I have learned that this service helps cancer warriors, major weight loss heroes and many others who are in need of added pigment to recreate or enhance their areola and/or nipples.
I chose to take a class with Vicky Martin after looking into her product and message. The practice breast mold is ideal for creating a 3D tattoo on a round skin-like surface. With the removable skins you can create several areolas and nipples. Since we had extra time at the end of the second day, some of us tattooed at least 3 areolas on one skin just by shifting it slightly. Vicky’s class message is more than just about tattooing, it is about empowerment for yourself and your client on many levels.
Upon completing the class, I feel even more confident in my own goals and purpose. I am thankful to be able to be in a position of not only providing this service to my community, but to someday soon provide the art of creating the areola and 3D nipples to the classroom and to the rest of the world! For some reason when I searched for pictures of this art I found very few of darker melanin. Part of my goals is to bring awareness to the entire community that this IS an option, be it they are of a lighter or darker complexion, man or woman!
3D Eyebrows….also called microblading….what is it?
“The Real Brows™ method is an innovative new technique designed for drawing thin 3D hair strokes about 1 mm under the skin’s surface using a specially designed tool and all-natural pigment (no machines). The Real Brows™ method can fill in sparse brows or create a new brow. Unlike traditional eyebrow tattoos, the Real Brows™ method won’t leave a flat dull look and is a much safer treatment. The “3D” effect adds realism to the end result; which makes this the perfect procedure for Men and Women seeking to improve the look of their brows. Real Brows™ lasts 6 months to 2 years and fade completely without leaving a shadow behind. To maintain Real Brows™, touch ups are necessary every 6 – 9 months”.
How is this different from classic or traditional eyebrow tattoos? The pigment applied during the 3D technique does not penetrate the skin as deep as the traditional tattoo, thus making it semi permanent. Eyebrows really define the face…the correct shape, length and color could make a major difference in your total appearance.
I had the procedure done the Summer of 2015 and I cannot express how happy I am to wake up each morning and have my brows already filled and shaped. The pain level…on a scale from 1-10, was about a 2 at first. Once the second round of anesthetics set in I didn’t feel anything. Please keep in mind everyone is different! Here is a video of my experience…
The eyebrows we very dark at first, after the recommended healing time, I was able to wash my brows and the remaining color was much lighter and more natural. Yes this is me below!
I decided to have my brows semi-permanently filled to save time in the morning, to always come out of the water with beautiful brows and of course to promote this awesome service!

Extensions themselves can cause irritation of the eyelid skin because they sometimes rub against the eyelid skin while the client is sleeping. The thicker the extensions, the more irritation they can cause in sensitive individuals. To rule out mechanical (i.e. non chemical) irritation, try switching to the thinner extensions (.15 mm). If the symptoms are reduces or eliminated, you can conclude that the adhesive is not the cause. People with sensitive skin are more likely to suffer eyelid irritation from the friction of thick lash extensions rubbing against the lid. Make sure the extensions are placed perfectly at the lash line. If they are too close, they will rub against the lid and cause itching, redness and swelling. If they are too far away, they’re able to move around too much, which causes more friction and irritation when sleeping.
Eyelash extensions should NOT touch the skin, the extensions should be applied about 1 mm away from the lid. During a ReLash/Fill appointment, the extensions that have grown beyond 2 mm should be removed and a new extension is applied. Within the last year there have been more options for thinner lashes, such as .07 and .05. At EyeDeux, we use a variety of diameters to customize the look and feel for each person. As a trained, certified and licensed eyelash enhancement studio, we at EyeDeux take this “Xtreme-ly” serious and thought we should share.
Notes from Jo Mousselli, Registered Nurse, CEO, President, and Co-Founder of Xtreme Lashes:
Does Xtreme Lashes add formaldehyde to its eyelash extension adhesives?
“We DO NOT add formaldehyde to ANY of our adhesives. Furthermore, our FlexFusion Adhesive is both hypoallergenic and medical-grade.”
“Formaldehyde is NOT an added ingredient in any Xtreme Lashes adhesives. Our adhesives are made using the same properties and ingredients found in medical-grade adhesives. Medical-grade adhesives are used by surgeons to close wounds without stitches, a practice called suture-less wound closure. Additionally, Our FlexFusion line of adhesives are hypoallergenic, medical grade, and manufactured at a US-based, FDA registered facility that specializes in medical adhesives.
There is a very, very low chance that during the degradation process, after the drop of adhesive has been dispensed from the bottle, a miniscule amount of formaldehyde ‘may’ be produced. This is true of all cyanoacrylate adhesives- including those used in the medical industry to close wounds without sutures. Please note that we teach our Lash Stylists to change the adhesive drop every 15 minutes and to discard the bottle every three months after opening. Having said this, if formaldehyde is released, the chance is very, very small and the amount is very, very minuscule.”
Do eyelash extension adhesives or eyelash extension applications cause infections?
“Infections are caused by pathogens: infectious microorganisms such as bacterias, viruses, fungus/yeast, and parasites. Xtreme Lashes adhesives are developed under strict sanitary and hygienic conditions. Additionally, our Lash Stylists are trained to perform safe, sanitary, and hygienic application techniques, using single-use disposable application products to prevent contamination and the spread of infectious organisms from one person to another through cross-contamination.
The only application tools that are NOT disposable are the tweezers, scissors, and adhesive trays which can be disinfected and sanitized with solutions such as Barbicide®. Furthermore, we train our Lash Stylists to segment lash extensions from lash trays, using designated clean scissors, and to apply the lash segments to a clean and single-use disposable sponge prior to the application to prevent cross-contamination.”
The following pictures were taken to show that when applied correctly, the natural lashes will still grow with the extensions attached. During a relash/fill appointment, your trained/certified/licensed technician will GENTLY remove the old extensions and apply new ones.
This was taken during a volume ReLash appointment. The client had a 2D removed and replaced with a new 2D. (2D means two extensions attached to one natural lash, this was done using .07 diameter extensions)

Part 2 of Eyelash Enhancements, Allergies and Allergic Reactions
A large portion of the population (up to 15%) has severe allergies to medical tape and band aids. Many of these people are not aware of the allergy until they have lash extensions applied. The under eye stickers are similar to medical tape and the skin around the eyes is much more sensitive and sensitive than the skin on the rest of the body… This allergy can appear at any time. Symptoms can develop after years of using lash extensions or they can appear the first time the product is used. To rule out tape allergies, use no stickers or tape on these clients. For most people, gel pass are a good substitute, for others, a plastic mascara shield… Tape allergies squally present themselves to the whole eye area, not just redness and swelling along the upper lash line.
Please inform your certified lash stylist of ANY irritation during the eyelash extensions application and/or after you leave the studio. If you experience this during the application, your stylist should be able to stop and either adjust the tape/ pads or replace with a different material to make the appointment more relaxing. If you experience this AFTER the appointment, contact your lash stylist so that they may record this in your file and use another material during your next appointment.
While reading posts from fellow lash stylists around the world on Facebook I decided to share this important post. Those who are not part of that private online group, fellow lash stylists and anyone who is currently and/or thinking about wearing eyelash enhancements, this should be read:
Allergic reactions are very complex because they can be caused by many different factors relating to the eyelash extensions and they can manifest themselves at any time and in many different ways. Some people experience redness and swelling of the eyelid close to the lash line. Some people have diffused redness and swelling all around the general eye area. Most of the time the redness and swelling is accompanied by itching.
There are several different causes of reactions and it is important to be able to distinguish a true allergic reaction from simple irritation. Irritation also has several different causes and differs from a true allergy in that it does not cause the body to produce histamine. Sometimes the only way to distinguish between an allergy and irritation is to see if the symptoms respond to anti-histamine medications such as Benedryl. Because we cannot give medical advice to our clients, we sometimes have to refer them to their family doctor if we suspect that they may be having a true allergic reaction. So how can an eyelash specialist recognize the causes and symptoms of a true allergic reaction? The following is a list of variables that must be considered:
1. Medical tape
3. Eyelash lid irritation
4. Seasonal allergies
5. Eye irritation
6. Inflammatory skin conditions
Please check back to this blog on further explanations of each point. At EyeDeux we take the profession of certified and licensed lash stylists seriously and want to assure or clients new and seasoned that we have their best interest at heart.

You’ve read that correctly! Yes you can get eyelash extensions on your lower lashes that will last 2-3 weeks. These extensions can be applied one extension to one natural lash or by using the Volume Technique
by adding 2-4 extensions per natural lash. (The Volume Technique is a special lash application by certified technicians)
These extensions can come in different lengths, diameters AND colors! They are for those who are used to wearing mascara on the lower lashes and want to avoid mascara smudged under the eyes and/or to avoid the raccoon look. These extensions also can add balance to the eyes…if you are already having extensions applied to the upper lashes, ask your trained technician about having some applied to the bottom lashes.
How many extensions can be applied to the lower lashes? Like the extensions on the upper lashes, this all depends on the quality of your lower lashes. Some may have 12-20 extensions while others may have 50+ extensions applied (the max number using the Volume Technique).
How to care for the lower lashes? Again this is the same as the extensions applied to the top….it is best to avoid oil based products, avoid touching them with your fingers and to remove makeup daily.
If you are in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, you may contact the EyeDeux Studios to schedule an appointment for lower lash extensions. We have a location on the Peninsula and the Southside to service you.
Thanks for the reminder from a fellow lash stylist! Allergy season is Here!
We must add, to clean your lash extensions, LINT FREE brushes are best! Available at both EyeDeux locations. Continue reading →
